is twitter your social lubricant?
Posted by Zadi Diaz

A lot of us are on Twitter these days -- making new online friends and connections, but what exactly is the distraction/production ratio? How much time do you spend on Twitter each day? Does Twitter keep you from doing other things, or does it help? How many Twitter friends have translated to other areas of your life/work? How many people do you follow and how do you personally choose who to follow? How do you use Twitter?

This is going to sound OTT, but I would say that Twitter has totally changed my life in the past year.
I get distracted by it, but I've also learnt to resist it when I'm working hard (took a LONG time to learn that, though) - I've met (IRL and virtually) more people through it than anything else real or virtual, combined, ever. A lot of those friendships are surprisingly strong.
And it's indirectly responsible for me being able to earn a good living making videos and for me making the decision to move to rural Canada from London. The world feels smaller now.
Also, I work by yourself and it can get lonely. One of the most powerful things about Twitter (for me) is that it's like having a massive open plan office where people are casually, ambiently sharing their thoughts about their lives and work. Happy or sad, bored or excited, it feels good to share stuff there.
