epic spotlight: james houston
Posted by Steve Woolf

James Houston is a student at the Glasgow School of Art in the visual communication program. As he writes on the Vimeo page for the video above, this is his final project before graduating. Quite a way to go out, James.

He explains the thinking behind his video:

Radiohead held an online contest to remix "Nude" from their album - "In Rainbows" This was quite a difficult task for everybody that entered, as Nude is in 6/8 timing, and 63bpm. Most music that's played in clubs is around 120bpm and usually 4/4 timing. It's pretty difficult to seamlessly mix a waltz beat into a DJ set.

It's too bad he missed the contest deadline, as I bet this was one of the most innovative things they would have received. He detailed the hardware he used for his video:

Sinclair ZX Spectrum - Guitars (rhythm & lead)
Epson LX-81 Dot Matrix Printer - Drums
HP Scanjet 3c - Bass Guitar
Hard Drive array - Act as a collection of bad speakers - Vocals & FX

When Zadi showed me his video (she found it), I thought it was one of the coolest, most geek-awesome things I'd seen in a long time. I'm looking forward to seeing the other work James creates in his art career!

James Houston you have inspired me into enrolling myself for the Glasgow School of Art in the visual communication program next year. Thank you. I am sure the world is going to see great things from you. I am definitely going to be sharing your name and work (visual/audio) to my peer groups. I'll be looking for your name on future media
