the hidden price of the iphone 3g

The big tech announcement this week was the highly anticipated, much rumored 2nd generation iPhone dubbed the iPhone 3G, which is set to be released on July 11th. The $199 price tag seems amazing on the surface, but as Zadi broke down on today's episode -- calculating the cost of the new iPhone is a little more complicated than the upfront price tag.

First off, the data plan is $10 more a month, meaning an extra $240 you'll pay over the life of the 2-year contract. I've also heard rumors that the text messaging bundle will no longer be included. If that's true, expect an extra $5 a month for 200 messages (which BTW isn't enough for most people nowadays).

Then you have the new in-store activation requirement, which basically kills any possibility for non-AT&T users in the U.S. to purchase the phone and unlock it for use on a different network (e.g. people like me). So for me, I'd have to switch carriers and pay approximately 50% more on my phone bill every month -- just so I can use the Jesus2 Phone.

Personally, if I could walk out of the Apple store with an unactivated 3G iPhone for $400, I would probably do it. But considering that isn't the case, and considering all the hidden/extra costs, I'm not sure if I'll bite. Too bad, because I was a big fan of the 1st generation iPhone -- until I dropped it. Grr...

Basically that's how they got it to be cheap. Well paying that amount of money and month can turn into a restriction to many people. I don't know how much will it cost here (Peru) but thanks to old Carlos Slim we can change Voice time for SMS messages so that will sort of make it up for the SMS restriction.

I CAN'T wait for June 11. I mean near worldwide release. That's awesome. To bad Telcel (mexico) is going to sell it for half the price. :(

Wait a minute: It's an extra $10/month for data AND they took away the included 200 SMS messages? Sheesh. AT&T is not making it very easy on the billing side of things.

Yeah. The iPhone and iPod, I've always known, are crap in my opinion.
iPod, why don't they have the ability to put videos and mp3s in one freaking directory instead of having to go through the itune or what have ya?
iPhone what's the big deal? Why is the dman thing so expensive?!! Stupid.
