how to have a green plastic-free picnic
Posted by Zadi Diaz

Labor Day weekend is in full-effect in the United States, which means hordes of people will be making their way to their favorite park or beach for their annual holiday picnic.

In honor of our continuing and expanded 7 Days without Plastic project, I thought it would be interesting to figure out a way to have a plastic-free picnic or barbecue. Now, I'm not saying that this is the easiest of tasks -- but let's see if it can be done.

behind the scenes: peer into eternity with sarah's green screen test

Here's a sneak peek at test footage I shot of Sarah for an upcoming EPIC FU promo. We don't do a lot of chroma key, so it was a fun change of pace. Keep in mind I only spent a few minutes keying out the background so it's pretty rough. Everyone here got a kick out of it, so I thought I'd post it for everyone else to enjoy!

Also note this is shot in HD (you can download the original file). Hmm.

stream full-length chiptunes documentary "reformat the planet"
Posted by Rick Rey

Reformat the Planet

A few months ago, I posted an interview Zadi did with two of the people behind the chiptunes documentary Reformat the Planet. This week Pitchfork.tv is streaming the full length version of the film. Definitely check it out!

Reformat the Planet is a documentary about the "chiptunes" music scene and its premiere event -- the annual Blip Festival in New York. Chiptunes music is inspired by video game and computer soundtracks of the 80's and 90's -- when music was synthesized in real-time by a sound chip capable of only a limited number of sounds.

rave reviews: the wackness
Posted by Sarah Atwood
wackness poster

Jonathan Levine has written and directed a coming-of-age film and 90's nostalgia piece The Wackness. The center of the story is Luke Shapiro, played by Josh Peck, who is trying to survive the summer after graduating from high school as a cool loser...cool because he's accepted by his peers as a pot dealer, loser because he has no actual friends. He builds an odd bond with his therapist, Dr. Squires, played by Ben Kingsley, who he is paying with weed. Although, generations in age difference, these two have similar struggles in life.

My expectations of Josh Peck's performance going into this movie were low. I've seen him on Nickelodeon with typical over-the-top kiddie acting. But, I was pleasantly surprised. Peck effortlessly shows the awkwardness of trying to be accepted and the frustrations of living in an unhappy home.

7 days w/o plastic: advice from ryanishungry.com
Posted by Zadi Diaz

Ryanne Hodson from ryanishungry.com supplied me with some basic important tips to keep in mind during my plastic-free week. I wanted to share her pointers with all of you.

The main point, and one that I found to be especially true is that my main plastic in-take came from food that was packaged in plastic containers. Avoiding these were difficult but surprisingly doable, especially if you're buying fresh food, which is ultimately better for your body.

I think seven days is a great start, but in order to get a real assessment of the scope of the project it has to last a bit longer so that you can see how you'll react when you come across certain situations that you may not encounter in those first seven days.

rambo 3 live! your worst nightmare on twitter

Rambo 3 Live! on Twitter
What happens when you cross the absurdity and pure awesomeness of an 80's action movie with the instantaneous, info-overloaded, gimme-more culture of the social web?

It's Rambo 3 Live! A no-holds barred public live commentary of my experience watching Rambo 3 in bite-sized Twitter nuggets. Attending is easy, just watch my Twitter stream during the event. Participation is optional.

WHEN: Tuesday, August 26th @ 9PM PST
WHERE: http://twitter.com/rickrey

From my Facebook Event page:

While watching Rambo 2 (First Blood: Part II) the other night I thought to myself - wow, there is so much great Twitter material here. Unfortunately I was too involved with the gripping plot to turn away and grab my laptop.

So on Tuesday night, August 26th I'm going to live Twitter my experience watching Rambo 3 for what I believe is the first time. This is a landmark Twitter experiment and I may lose many followers - a risk I'm willing to take.

If following the action isn't enough, you can simultaneously Twitter your own Rambo 3 experience at exactly 9:00PM PST. I'm pretty sure it's in stock at every Blockbuster worldwide.

Sign up to "attend" this live Twittervent on Facebook or Upcoming.org. If you want to participate, give me a heads up.

black kids' epic 80s cartoon adventure
Posted by Annie Tsai

Remember that old Disney movie where the kids flew into a semi-animated world of adventure? That's how the awesome video for Thursday's Epic Spotlight kind of begins... but way more fun! The Black Kids take off from a roller coaster to an odyssey that totally beats what those kids on the flying bed had. We're talking hover boards, laser-emitting goggles, and transforming vehicles here. The song itself? Even cooler! The video for "Look At Me (When I Rock Wichoo)" throws back to Speed Racer and a bunch of other 80's Saturday morning cartoons that I can't name because I fail at that whole decade.

Take one letter out of a movie poster...can you guess which movie its from? This actually sounded pretty easy to me. Then I stared at the letters and stared and stared. None of the movies are obscure and the font's are pretty specific but unfortunately for me, when the letter was put next to another letter that is from a different movie, my brain went all jumbly.

day 1 recap, starting day 2: seven days w/o plastic
Posted by Zadi Diaz

day one recap: seven days w/o plastic from Zadi Diaz on Vimeo.

So yesterday went fairly well, didn't take in much new plastic into my life except for the two unsuspecting condiment containers that came with my lunch. I have to remember to make sure to ask for no straws, etc. Those kinds of things just pop up without warning. Made me aware that there are many small plastic items that add up in the end.

The most embarrassing moment? Buying a dress and having to ask the attendant if they had paper bags -- otherwise I wouldn't be able to buy the dress. I of course said it was for a project... what can I say? I was afraid she would think I was completely nuts. Surprisingly, she completely dug what I was doing. Whew.

And so it begins -- my foray into the land of the plastic-free. I have to admit that I really have no idea what to expect other than to expect to encounter plastic everywhere. For instance just this morning I thought, what happens if I cut myself? I can't use a band-aid? That's insane! What am I thinking?

But that's really not the point of this project. There is good plastic -- like bike helmets and band-aids, and there's bad plastic, the disposable kind -- like cups, utensils, and containers.

saul williams straddles the line of uneasy listening
Posted by Rick Rey

embed

Saul Williams is no stranger to EPIC FU. Last year we covered the release of his once-freely downloadable album The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust, co-produced by Trent Reznor. A few weeks ago we explored the controversy around his commercial collaboration with Nike, and today we're spotlighting his latest music video -- Convict Colony off NiggyTardust.

For me one of the standout qualities of Saul's music is the rawness and intensity he achieves while not sounding too experimental or heading into the unlistenable/unenjoyable territory. He's walks a fine line there, and the result is a stand-out experience that tends to stick with you.

NiggyTardust is no longer available as a free download, so you'll have to pick it up on iTunes. It's definitely worth exploring.

I first heard about the weekinreview when it was conceived in 2004. They've stayed strong since then, expanding to other cities and countries even. Think of it as the DIY news.

Here's my favorite joke contributed so far, posted by MIX member Pete:

Two engineering students were walking across campus when one said, "Where did you get such a great bike?"

The second engineer replied, "Well, I was walking along yesterday minding my own business when a beautiful woman rode up on this bike. She threw the bike to the ground, took off all her clothes and said, "Take what you want.""

The second engineer nodded approvingly, "Good choice; the clothes probably wouldn't have fit."
